Claiming costs and keeping records

As your audience grows, you may start spending money on the tools and services you use to create content. You may be able to claim a deduction for some of these costs if you’re earning income from your content.

To claim a cost, it needs to closely relate to the work you do as a creator, not be private or personal and you need to keep records to support your claim. These records might include receipts, invoices, bank statements, or notes about how you use something for your creator work.

If you use something for both business and personal reasons, such as your phone or internet, you can usually only claim the part that relates to your creator activities. Keeping simple records to track costs can help you work this out later and make tax time easier.
