Release from tax debt

If you are a sole trader experiencing serious financial hardship and cannot meet basic living expenses for yourself or your family, you may be eligible to apply for release from some or all of your tax debt.

Only some tax debts can be considered for release. The most common are income tax, fringe benefits tax (FBT) and pay as you go (PAYG) instalments.

Debts for goods and services tax (GST), PAYG withholding, super guarantee charge and director penalty notices can’t be released.

Companies, trusts and partnerships are not able to have their tax debts released.
