How do I register for GST?

If you’re required to register for GST, or want to voluntarily register, the easiest way to do this is online.

You can register online via:

You can also register:

  • by calling the ATO on 13 28 66
  • through your registered tax agent or BAS agent
  • using a paper form called ‘Add a new business account’. You can order the form using the online publication ordering service on the ATO website.

You will need an ABN before you can register for GST. Information on applying for an ABN can be found on the government’s Australian Business Register site.

The ATO does not charge a fee to register for an ABN or GST.

Each ABN requires a separate GST registration. However, if you have more than one business under the same ABN, you only need to register for GST once.

Let’s look at the following example.

Ivan is a sole trader who runs a small retail business selling clothes and accessories online and in a physical store. He also provides consulting services in the fashion industry. Although these are separate businesses, Ivan only needs to register for GST once as both businesses are both registered under the one ABN.

Once processed, the ATO will notify you of your GST registration details, including the date your registration is effective. From this date you will need to keep records for GST sales and purchases and will be required to lodge a BAS.

Be wary of third parties you don’t know offering to register for GST or an ABN on your behalf. They may not be legitimate, and you may end up being caught in a scam.

If you are uncertain or unsure, do not share any business or account details with them. Instead, speak to a registered tax adviser or contact the ATO.
